2024 Beheloka – new primary school ‘Ranomasina’ and a well

Beheloka is a fishing village about 100 km south of Toliara, in the southwest of Madagascar, on the Mozambique Channel.

Residents have two sources of income:  fishing, practised mainly by men, and the trade of dry wood,  harvested mainly by women.

Poverty is one of the major problems of this part of the island, aggravated in recent years by a severe famine and destructive cyclones during the rainy season (due to  climate changes).

Many children drop out of school to help their parents with their activities. In addition, school fees are often too expensive for families.

The private primary school “Ranomasina” (‘sea’ in Malagasy language) was created in September 2023 by a young man with a degree in history and geography who decided to stay in Beheloka and do something for his community. The school was officially recognized in November  2023, and has now six teachers.

The school, which consists of the primary cycle ( class from 11th to 7th) and the kindergarten, is currently housed in  a wooden structure of about 30 square meters for 102 children. The classrooms are separated by tents, without desks and have no basic material (pens, notebooks, books).

Mitia’ project in favour of the private elementary school “Ranomasina”  in Beheloka consists of: purchasing of a plot of  land, construction of 3 buildings to house 6 classrooms, construction of toilets and digging of a well to provide fresh water.

For the school year 2024-2025, we hope that pupils will be able to attend the new school in better conditions.

Total amount of the project

23.200€ construction of 6 classrooms, teachers’ office and toilet facilities (including purchase of land and fencing)
